About the project

Mosaic project is a pioneering initiative that combines technology with cultural heritage, aiming to reproduce and preserve Byzantine mosaics with modern methods.

Through the use of innovative digitization techniques and advanced production processes, the project aims to create exact replicas of the mosaics, maintaining their accuracy in shape and color. With the implementation of the project, new technologies and methodologies will be developed that will allow the mass production of replica mosaics at various scales, which can be used for touristic, educational, research purposes and also as good practices for their rescue and conservation. The project not only contributes to the preservation of our cultural heritage, but also enhances its visibility, creating new opportunities for the dissemination of our history and art on a global level.

Mosaic is a collaboration of leading institutions, such as the Technical University of Crete, the Frederick Research Center, the Archbishop Makarios III Foundation - Byzantine Museum and the Department of Antiquities of the Deputy Ministry of Culture. This partnership ensures combined expertise and experience, enabling the development and application of the most up-to-date techniques and practices for the protection and promotion of our cultural national treasures. The Mosaic project also brings cultural heritage to the forefront in an innovative and sustainable way, making it accessible to a wider audience and strengthening the connection of technology with history and tradition.
